Pisac and its market

A picturesque town and important archaeological site, Pisac (Indian reduction in colonial times) and the ruins of the same name are located 32 km from Cusco, at the foot of a hill in the sacred valley.

The Pisac Market three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and is a continuation of an ancient tradition of trade and commercial activity that takes place in the main square of this town.

The surrounding rural communities bring their agricultural products to exchange at the market and there is plenty of high quality. Locally, made arts and crafts are made to draw tourist attention.

Pisac ruins are in the outskirts of the city, which is located high on the mountainside, its most obvious feature in the abundance of terraces that covers most of the mountain where the ruins are located.

In the first section of the complex we can see several finely worked imperial rooms, among them is the Temple of the Sun that contains a sundial or Intihuatana. We can also observe the water fountains that have been part of a complex hydraulic engineering system.

The largest Inca cemetery in the region is located in Pisac, which is home to several mummies buried in fetal position, a characteristic of the Andean burial, Pisac was adapted to fit the contour of the land, achieving a perfect harmony between man and nature.

Ollantaytambo

The current town of Ollantaytambo and the ruins of the same name is located 76 km northwest of Cusco, the current town is a living museum due to the remaining architecture because its inhabitants are directly descended from the Incas who populated that area.

The town of Ollantaytambo is properly equipped to deal with the flow of tourists, although the area, the Inca town of Ollantaytambo is the only town left in Peru that retains the original features of the streets, which still have aqueducts along them. The colonial style houses are built over the old Inca houses and you can still see a large number of them with doors that have finely worked double lintels.

The ruins of Ollantaytambo are located a short distance away are another group of archaeological ruins made up of terraces. As you pass these and climb up the mountain you can appreciate a wall adorned with a series of vaults and megalithic stone gate. Inside there are large remarkable stones of designs rarely seen in Inca architecture. In an unfinished temple dedicated to the sun god you can make out sculptures of the Andean cross.

Chinchero and its market

Chinchero is located 30 km northwest of Cusco and was, time of the Incas, a stop on the way to Machupicchu.

Chinchero market is a handicraft fair held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, where typical products of the region are bought and sold. At the market you can purchase handmade cloth produced by local women who still use the same weaving techniques as the Incas, 500 years before them.

Chinchero Ruins was built around 1478 by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui, it had a religious, political and military function. The mostly native inhabitants still occupy the ancestral buildings.

The Plaza has a unique cellular wall with jamba 12 style, tall two-meter stone niches used for royal mummies, which also serves as the retaining wall of the other, adjacent plaza.

The church, built partly on Inca walls, Francisco de Toledo ordered the church of “Nuestra Señora de Monserrat” contains painting, murals painted on the walls and architectural features of great value.

A short distance from the square we find remains of houses and several agricultural terraces contouring the landscape, as well as the immense area that was intended for gathering and popular celebrations.
