This two-day itinerary will take you to explore the stunning region of the Sacred Valley of the Incas on the first day, visiting places such as Pisac, Moray, Salinas and Ollantaytambo. Then, on the second day, you will leave Ollantaytambo early to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, passing Wiñay Wayna and Puerta del Sol before arriving at the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu. Finally, you will return to Cusco after an unforgettable experience.
The tour begins with pickup from your hotel at 7:30 am with our private transportation and we will head towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas, taking the direct route to Pisac. First we headed to the Taray viewpoint to enjoy a classic view of the Urubamba Valley. We then head to the archaeological site of Pisac, where you can see the largest Inca cemetery with more than 2000 tombs. There we can admire the incredible agricultural terraces dug into the mountain, explore the Inca tunnel and the religious area of this important citadel. Here we will spend more than 2 hours exploring the Inca city. We will then return to the colorful Pisac market, spend some time visiting it and then head to Urubamba for lunch.
We will then visit the archaeological site of Moray, also known as “The Greenhouses of the Incas”, an evolutionary bowl of ecological difference. The terrace levels are carved into a large bowl, which was excavated by the Incas. The terraces have varied microclimates depending on the depth of the bowl. It is believed that the Incas used them to discover the optimal conditions for their crops.
Extending our trip to the colonial city of Maras, we walked downhill to the pre-Inca salt mine. Salt flats have been used for salt extraction since before Inca times. A hot water spring (Ojo de agua) at the top of the valley discharges a small stream of water heavily laden with salt, which is diverted to the salt flats and evaporated to produce a salt that is used for human and animal consumption. Finally, we head to Ollantaytambo, having time to explore the bustling ancient Inca town and the massive Inca ruins, with a tour provided by our guide. Here we will spend the night at your hotel in Ollantaytambo, ready to begin the Inca Trail the next day.
Your guide will pick you up at your hotel at 5:30 am in Ollantaytambo to transfer you to the Ollantaytambo train station for the 6:10 am expedition train. After an hour and 15 minutes of train travel, we arrive at 104 kilometers (2,100 m / 6,927 ft) on the Cusco-Machu Picchu highway, where we begin your hike and pass through the first checkpoint. Then, we begin a moderate ascent for three hours to the magnificent archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m / 8747 feet). Once we arrive, you will enjoy spectacular views of the Urubamba Canyon, impressive Inca sites, and the connection to the traditional four-day Inca Trail.
After having had time to enjoy this beautiful view, we continued our walk to Puerta del Sol (2,730mts / 9,007ft). From there, you will have the first spectacular view of the Citadel of Machu Picchu in all its splendor and majestic monumentality. After enjoying the view, we will walk downhill for about an hour to the Machu Picchu citadel. Once there, we will visit one of the most important mystical centers in the world: the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. A 2-hour guided tour will take you into the fascinating history of these mysterious ruins.
Afterwards, you’ll have time to explore Machu Picchu and take photos before heading to Aguas Calientes. In the afternoon (6:20 p.m.), you will take the Expedition train back to Ollantaytambo and our private transportation will take you to Cusco and your hotel. You will arrive around 10:00 pm.
